Chivalry & Heraldry Tapestries

Chivalry is a term related to the medieval institution of Knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of Knightly virtues, honour and courtly love. The word is derived from the French word chevalier, indicating one who rides a horse.

Heraldry relates to coats of arms, titles of nobility and court ceremonies. Heraldic emblems were initially placed on Knights shields, flags and other armour to enable them to be easily recognised by friends and enemies.

Out of stock tapestries can take up to 28 days to be woven. Feel free to email for stock availability.

Knights Joust

The sport of jousting was favoured by kings and noblemen as it was a way to keep knights in peak fighting condition and develop their war skills, which could be needed at any time. Traditionally, a knight would ride at a tournament for a lady, usually someone who was married and above him on the social scale. The lady would give her favour, something like a hair ribbon or handkerchief, and the knight would ride with the favour attached to his clothing during the tournament.

The Three Bogatyrs

A beautiful reproduction in tapestry from a famous painting by Russian artist Victor Vasnetsov 1898 (origninal oil on canvas).

Three Bogatyrs, or three knights, are the heroes of many legends: Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich and Aliosha Popovich. Each character has his own set of legends and each hero had his own adventures, every one defended his land, the poor, and fought the enemies of Russia; and they were all adored by the people. Here the painter depicted them all together, guarding the Russian borders.

Le Roi - Arthur

The cult of chivalry reaches its peak during the 15th century. The powerful courts organized tournaments where knights, in gilded armours, held oriflammes made of painted damask silk. These knighthoods took an oath to defend the crown, the Cross, to protect the helpless, to respect women and to lead an irreproachable life.
